"Painting Trees"

The videos posted of Bob Ross are all very similar, except the Family Guy video which was a parody of Bob's show. Bob describes his painting methods in great detail that is easy for the viewers to mimic if they so wish to. He uses great symbols to describe his paintings, such as his "happy trees." He shows the audience how to fix common mistakes that they may encounter. His paintings all seem to be landscape art pieces. He includes very similar and natural colors, such as green, white, blue, and, brown. He is very good about explaining the techniques involved and the brushes needed to achieve that look. He is very precise with his work and also very well organized. He even cleans his knife at one point to make it clearer to the viewers of the colors he was using. He includes different depths in his paintings. He has the mountains which are very distinct, and mist that follows below the mountains. He definitely gives his viewers the feeling of freedom and creativity though.Bob seems to want to have control over his viewers. The only time he really gives his audience any leeway, is when he is talking about the amount of branches to add to the trees. The Family Guy clip made fun of him for being so quirky. They portray Bob as being a bit of a creep and perfectionist.
The first thing that I observed in the Disney video, is that Walt Disney wants his viewers to find their own style and taste in the art world. He does not want to dictate how other's art should look, but he believes that each person can bring a new, unique piece of art to the table. Walt just wants to lead his viewers in the right direction and to give them that extra push of encouragement that they need to believe that their art is worth something. Walt encourages everyone to be themselves! He introduces us to four different men and their own different styles art. All of the men are able to bring they own unique pieces of art to the table to create one big masterpiece! Many different men worked together in creating Sleeping Beauty. Small details from deciding which Sleeping Beauty would look best in motion, to how to add in fairy dust and . trees in the background are the most important details. Watching this video made me realize just how much detail and effort goes into creating art. Just like writing, every single move made affects the outcome of the final piece of work.

  1. Super amounts of detail. Great job!! I liked that you talked about how Bob doesn't really give his viewers control over the painting he's very particular about what needs to look like what, but that in the Disney video all the artists have pretty different takes on the tree. They all see and draw different aspects of the tree. I think your post can perfectly relate to writing.

  2. There is no way that I would be able to follow Mr. Ross and recreate what he's doing, but I have to say that he is very good at explaining what he's doing. I definitely have to agree with the idea that he wants to give his viewers the freedom and creativity to venture out and explore (kinda like Zack).
Disney was definitely trying to make it seem as if they give their artist freedom and allow them to add their own influence on each piece, yet I have to disagree with you on the fact that they actually do. However, I definitely, definitely agree with your comparison of writing and painting and how each is just a set of moves that are linked together to produce the best outcome possible.

  3. There was a lot of good information on them moves Bob Ross used to show the audience how to replicate his paintings. He was very descriptive. I like how he referenced that he used symbols. I didn't notice this at the time, but now thinking about it I realize the effectiveness of symbols and how they instantly make a viewer think a certain way. What did you think Bob Ross' genre was?
