     Thlog #3
This week we were assigned to read Murder! (Rhetorically Speaking) by Janet Boyd. On Wednesday’s class we actually did the exercise presented in this article. We were given five facts of a murder scene, which included who, what, where, when, and how the made-up human was killed. In groups, we were assigned different genres to write about and to include these five facts. My group was assigned to write a news report about the death of Mark Smith. This was simple to write because it is a genre we are very common with. The report was a combination of formal and informal. In the beginning of the report we had “Breaking news: man stabbed to death in his own apartment complex.” This was in a bigger font and bold lettering, which is typically seen in news reports as a way to grab the attention of others fast. The actual details surrounding his death were not the main focus of our report. Instead we made sure all of the facts were presented, but we also wanted to make Mark seem real, so we included friends and family members expressing how good of a man Mark was and how he did not deserve to die this way. We added a few words from the person who came across Mark’s body as well. In the end of the report, we included a number to a police station and asked viewers to call that number if they had any information or leads to this crime.
