Thlog #4

Last week I found the “moves” activity very interesting. I had never thought about writers having moves before, so this opened up a different perspective to me. I learned that a writer’s moves are basically everything from the diction they choose to the tone of the entire writing piece. It is important to pick your moves wisely depending on the genre of your writing piece.

Looking at How to Read Like a Writer by Mike Bunn, made me realize just how much effort a writer has to put into choosing his words. I already examine other writer’s works to see if I want to adopt some of their techniques, but I never thought too deeply about how the author’s choice of words made me react in a certain way. I realize how important it is to examine the author’s every move in a writing piece, but this allows you to learn how you want to communicate with your own audience in your writing pieces. Usually when I read a book, I read to gain information or insight on a certain subject. When I am reading a book in my leisure time, I never really pay attention to how it was constructed because I just want to enjoy the book without overanalyzing it. I realize now though that examining how an author writes the books that I read in my leisure time is probably the most beneficial. I obviously choose these books because I feel a connection to the subject matter, so learning to read these books like a writer will be the most beneficial way for me to become a better writer.
